Unlock the secrets of a powerful pitching stride by mastering the front leg phase.
The moment, when the pitcher plants their front foot and transfers their weight forward, can make a huge difference in your pitching velocity, accuracy, and consistency.
In this lesson, our expert coaches break down the mechanics of the front leg phase and provide actionable tips and drills to help you improve. You'll learn how to achieve proper stride length, maintain balance and control, and generate more power from your lower body.
The first drill we will use to develop your lead leg is:
South-East/North-West Slam:
- Standing in a larger than normal stride.
- Initiate the movement by straightening your front knee and pulling your front glute backwards-rotating your pelvis

Next up Overhead Medball Toss:
- Stand in a large stride with both feet facing the target, holding a medball over your head.
- Push up with the front leg so it comes off the ground.
